Aviation Stories for February 10, 2012

Here are some articles that you may have missed this week:

A rare addition to a rare collection.
Il2 SturmovikThis article is from the News Tribune in Tacoma, WA. The Flying Heritage Collection of rare, meticulously restored aircraft recently received a new addition. They took delivery of the only remaining flying example of the Russian IL-2 Sturmovik. [The Nov/Dec issue of Warbirds International has a 6-page article about this plane.]

Will you be walking around when you’re 101-years-old?
This one is from the Lebanon (OH) Express. In my experience, most 101-year old individuals are not too active. Here’s one who it would be nice to emulate.

Whoop, Whoop – Pull Up!
This article is from the Seattle Times. Don Bateman’s life was set on a collision course with aviation safety when, as an 8-year-old, he witnessed an airplane accident. He has tracked air disasters for 40 years, trying to invent ways to prevent them. In the words of Bill Voss, chief executive of the Flight Safety Foundation. “It’s accepted within the industry that Don Bateman has probably saved more lives than any single person in the history of aviation.”

A short but eventful life
This is from the Macon (GA) Telegraph. January 26th was the 120th anniversary of Bessie Coleman’s birth. She only lived to the age of 34, but in those years she made her mark on aviation history.

Greetings Tracy, and thanks for another great collection of articles. You must have a secret set of high-level Google searches in your bag of tricks. This week’s collection was even more fun due to a personal link (if small) to intems #2 and #3. Best regards and happy landings, -Craig
