Aviation Stories for April 8, 2011

by

Here are some more aviation stories that I came across this week.

Piper taildraggers at Reno Stead airport. When I drove out to the airport the other day I could a mini Piper fly-in going on at the end of my hangar row. Two of the planes belong to the same person – in the hangar across from me, so there weren’t many fly-ins. Thought I’d pass along the photo.

You have to be old and flying to join the group in hangar 652
There is a group of pilots at the Lompoc, CA airport who gather when the mood strikes them. They will soon be inducting a new member into their group. It would be nice to qualify some day…

A community outreach program teaches Southern California High School students about aviation.
The community outreach program associated with the Flabob Airport visits several High Schools in the area each year in an effort to teach young adults about aviation.

Another excellent source of female role models in scientific career fields.
NASA has a new website that provides profiles of over 35 women working at NASA which can be used as role models for young girls looking toward their futures.

Brooke Castillo : A first for the Philippines.
This is an article profiling the first female jet airline captain in the Philippines. She has quite a varied background.

High-speed rail vs. air travel in China – which will prevail?
This is an English article from a Chinese site that discusses the relative merits of high-speed rail transportation and air travel. These rail systems are moving as fast as my plane flies – 155 mph/135 kt/250 km/hr.  Really interesting article.

The Lightspeed Foundation Grant finalists have been chosen – now it’s time for you to vote.
This is a General Aviation News article describing the Lightspeed Foundation and their grant finalists. This link takes you to the Foundation site where you can vote for your favorite aviation non-profit to receive one of the available grants.

Thanks. I know I’ve been behind on my posts. I’m in the middle of a redesign of a website for an aviation non-profit and it’s turning out to be a much bigger project than I anticipated. And I’m about to pick up the webmaster position of a local EAA chapter that I just joined. At least the weather is turning nice again up here in the mountains. I might actually get to fly some time this week.

At least I don’t have to pack to go back to work anymore. Can’t believe I had enough time to do that….
